Paintings With Soul

Since October 2006 I've been a daily painter, creating a new pet portrait at least 5 times per week. Over the years I've expanded my offerings to include a variety of animals, pets, race horses, children and other treasured heirlooms. In addition, I accept a limited number of commissions each year.

In 2015 I am honored to be the Kentucky Derby Artist.

You may use the links below right to receive my daily paintings via email or to follow my blog with a feed. I post additional info, including in-process jpgs and other related information, on the studio Facebook page as well.

Meanwhile, thanks
so much for your continued support of my artwork.

I got up early this morning, excited to put the finishing touches on this one.

The drips/focus bleed down the canvas, from right to left, creating a mesmerizing curtain which the horses gently part.

I wish I could be more like Tiny. Satisfied with kibble and chasing butterflies. I suppose starting by appreciating the simple things is a step in the right direction.

The Only Thing Brighter Than Carmen's Tiara Was Her Sparkling Personality

"The Only Thing Brighter Than Carmen's Tiara Was Her Sparkling Personality," a Bauble Painting, 9" x 12" x 1/2", acrylics on gallery stretched canvas, featuring a finch sporting just a few carats of ice. This painting is $289 (includes s&h inside the US) to the first asking nicely.

Started spring cleaning the studio this weekend. Found a stash of girl scout cookies I'd forgotten about. They expired in 2013. I stuck them in the freezer for 48 hours to kill any bacteria. Can't waste Samoas!

Nobody Ever Accused Gertrude of Eating Like a Bird

Nobody Ever Accused Gertrude of Eating Like a Bird

A Bauble Painting, 12" x 12" x 1/2", acrylics on gallery stretched canvas, featuring a rather curvacious finch. This painting is $309 (includes s&h inside the US) to the first asking nicely.

This week it's been all about drips and stripes and sparkles and modeled vs flat space while trying not to think of current world events. Wishing I could wrap every child in an iridescent magical hug and make them safe and loved and valued.

For Me? You Shouldn't Have!

For Me? You Shouldn't Have!

A Bauble Painting, 9" x 12" x 1/2", acrylics on gallery stretched canvas, featuring a bullfinch with a diamond crown (what DO you get a chick who has it all?). This painting is $289 (includes s&h inside the US) to the first asking nicely.

The Princess drove me to the art supply store, where I bought 25 canvases. They are patiently waiting for the next flock of birds. Or mice. Or whatever I feel like painting next.

I might have also bought a new pair of Converse.

I am deep into exploring the boundaries between painting a realistic form and setting it into a dreamscape, while at the same time pushing my paints to do things I've never tried before.

And creating joyous images.

Best. Job. Ever.

Pinkie, Reworked

FINISHED: "Pinkie," from The Beribboned Series, 12" x 16", acrylics on panel. Available (when finished) to the first asking nicely, $579 (includes s&h inside the US). Thank you so much.

Pinkie got a facelift, literally. I put all my references away, including the ribbon setup. I redrew her features from memory, then decided that she needed to be a lighter value than the ribbon. Then I adjusted the bow a bit, too, and tucked her ear behind, so it all perched perfectly on her head.

Because I was able to listen to the painting (instead of being married to my references and original concept), Pinkie's portrait turned out far nicer.

Minnie Loves Playing Dressup

"Minnie Loves Playing Dressup," (yes, that's a bit of glare on this one as it's a gray day and I'm working under studio lights), 16" x 20" x .75", acrylics on cradeled panel (and painted around the sides, so no need to frame!). $699 for this dear little mouse, including s&h inside the US. Inquiries to me, and thank you so much.

Minnie made me laugh all day long. She's got a great sense of humor.

She is also done overtop another piece that had lots of texture, which is delightfully showing through. Harlequin patterning and various scratched in lines/patterns.

Cheep

ABOVE: "Cheep," a 12" x 9" oval, acrylics on gallery stretched canvas and painted right around that edge (no need to frame!), $249.  BELOW, FROM LEFT: "Chick 1" and "Chick 2", 8" square, acrylics on canvasboard, $75 each. All inquiries may come to me, and thank you so much.

NOTE: Chick 1 has sold, thank you.

Today's goals included befriending yellow (she can be a miserable wench at times) while learning more about chicks, which, as you know, I am newly obsessed with.

These studies aren't as detailed as my other pieces, but they have a certain je ne sais quoi, so I've priced them specially just for you.

Catnap

"Catnap," a portrait of studio kitty daVinci, 12" x 12", acrylics on panel. Available to the first daring to invite Vinnie into their home. He's been peeling wallpaper from the walls and taunts the crated puppy ridiculously. Although the painted version should behave far better. $200 will get you a cat. Inquiries to me, and thank you so much.

And yes, I am still doing commissioned pet portraits, starting around $300 for a museum quality painting. A portrait is a fabulous way to honor our four legged family members. Reach out if this is something you are considering - I do a couple of them each month.

Peep

"Peep," from The Beribboned Series, 16" x 20", acrylics on panel. Available to the first asking nicely, $649 (includes s&h inside the US). Thank you so much.

Can you see Peep and Chickie hanging together (pictured below)? Like in a toddler's room, a nursery, a powder room, a bright hallway...... the possibilities are endless. I would love to see them go together, which means special pricing for one lucky collector - $999. We can put a payment plan together, too (that applies to any purchases of original art) - message me if you are interested.

Chickie

"Chickie," from The Beribboned Series, 16" x 20", acrylics on panel. Available to the first asking nicely, $649 (includes s&h inside the US). Thank you so much.

Nobody paints chicks like Alecia Underhill. They are BIG and soft and full of yummy color. Here's a little print of one of my favs of hers, Grumpy Chick.

I gave my chick a good try, nonetheless, with her blessing. And I had a great time! You can bet there will be more of these.... it IS almost spring, after all!

Pinkie, in Process

IN PROCESS: "Pinkie," from The Beribboned Series, 12" x 16", acrylics on panel. Available (when finished) to the first asking nicely, $579 (includes s&h inside the US). Thank you so much.

For whatever reason, today was a struggle. We all have days where nothing seems to work out, myself included. But now that I've painted this little mouse, and repainted, and painted again, and yet again, so many times that I've lost count, I can see what my issue is.

So I am ending my day with clarity. And some mac and cheese. Both of them being very good things.

If you want something to do, hop on over to my new website and let me know what you think!! I've been picking away at it all week long.

Peony Diptych

"Peony Diptych," (2) 12" square gallery stretched canvases that overall create a 12" x 24" image.  Done in acrylics and paint pen, featuring one of my favorite flowers, peonies. Available to the first asking nicely for $350.

I'm planning to study florals a bit more seriously in a series of smaller works. I'm paying greater attention to modeling and composition, among other things. Trying to think about the painting as an abstract object and not as a representation of flowers, if that makes any sense. And if not, that's ok, too, because you can simply enjoy the piece for the floral element!

Also, I made a number of new images available for prints and various reproductions - you can see them here.

Tulip Bowl

"Tulip Bowl," 24" x 30" acrylics on panel, featuring violet tulips in a goldfish bowl. Another piece created for licensing consideration, this one is available to the first asking nicely for $899, with one contingency.

IF Tulip Bowl makes the licensing cut, I'll ship the artwork to my agency for a high resolution scan, after which the painting can be shipped to a new home. The scanning process should be completed by the end of March.

Fiestaware

FINISHED: "Fiestaware," 24" x 30" acrylics on panel, featuring a mixed bouquet tucked into a turquoise Fiestaware pitcher. This one is available to the first asking nicely for $899, with one contingency.

I've been asked by my agent to create a few floral paintings for licensing consideration.  Which means that if she likes "Fiestaware" (or whichever of these floral pieces), I'll ship the artwork to her for a high resolution scan, after which the painting can be shipped to a new home. The scanning process should be completed by the end of March.

"Hyacinth," 16" x 20" acrylics on panel, available to the first asking nicely for a very affordable $200 (plus $20 s&h).

I couldn't resist these bulbs when I grocered this week. They are utterly charming in their little weathered bowl, and they smell so good. Or so I thought, until I moved them into the studio and put the spot light on them. The warmth from the bulb made them smell even better..... if that's possible!
