The sun was slipping in and out of cloud cover today, but after the glorious weekend, I couldn’t help but think this morning about sunbathing and doing a little bit of nothing outside. Not that I did anything about it, mind you, just some aimless thinking. With that in mind, though, choosing the reference photo for today’s dog-a-day was simple. The hardest part was stopping laying more paint on. This piece has had 6 hours to dry and it’s still damp! Many layers of orange, pink and yellow make for a piece that’s dense with color and brushwork. “Basenji Study,” 4x8, acrylic dog painting on canvasboard, $60. What a busy, busy day this has been, full of a varied and delightful cross-section of inspiration. My morning kicked off with a consult and photo shoot starring a precious little Siamese kitten (CoCo’s portrait will be forthcoming – you can watch for her on the wet paint page of my website – http://www.turtledovedesigns.com/ ), and ended with my daughter, aka Little Miss Muffet, leading off her kindergarten’s musical production of Mother Goose (those “baa-baa-black-sheep” would have made the most darling painting!). So tonight’s painting is getting sent off a little later than usual, and also mirrors how I feel as I sit here typing. This is KC, a basenji portrait, 4x6, acrylic on canvasboard. KC’s painting was a commissioned portrait, and is already getting prepped for shipment. Thanks, as always, for looking. And for sharing these paintings with friends and family. Today’s painting stars Chumba, a basenji who was loved dearly and lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. At 6x8, the piece is large enough to give detail and life to his laughing profile, and really capture the unique qualitiy to his gaze, yet still retains an intimacy about it, too. Thank you again, to Maria Cotter, for commissioning me to paint her two, Taku and Chumba, this week. I had a great time translating a few of her favorite photos into paint. Thanks, as always, for looking. And for sharing these dailies with your friends and family!
