I got painfully burned out  from over a decade of daily pet portraits   (www.PaintingaDogaDay.com) , but also because I am now a Disrupted Realism artist creating fractured, expressive work which doesn’t lend itself to preserving a likeness in the way most think of portraiture. So when my newest collector approached me in late March about a portrait of her horse, I steeled myself to say no. I read her proposal, and despite not having a blessed idea about how I might paint him, I had a full body response to the project.  She, in turn, granted me full artistic license. This painting is a rework. I was in love with the prior version,  Indigo Apricot , at the time I created her, and she’s been hanging in the studio ever since. The last couple weeks, though, I began to see things differently. I itched to go back into the painting and make some changes. In artist speak this is called “seeing with fresh eyes.” Fresh eyes are an important tool in that they help the artist critically view a work of art and design adjustments as it progresses. Ironically, fresh eyes are tough to maintain when one is in the thick of creating said work. I had always thought of roses as my own personal symbol (because of my grandmother’s love of gardening) but this experience, creating the artwork for the 2015 Run for the Roses, cemented the rose as one of my “things.” How has it been 10 years? Heirloom Rose is one of a handful of new pieces that wallow in the whole horse and rose concept. While skies turn gray and color fades in Michigan, I’m already dreaming of spring and a glorious garden. I am a lucid dreamer. Many of the animals in my paintings come from my dreams. This lovely dark horse is an important character from them. She pulls me out of my bad dreams, quite literally - when things get too brutal, I simply think of her, reach out to touch her, and she pulls me through a veil into a new dreamscape. This particular painting is also a new iteration of a piece I did a decade back titled  Big Red . I think it’s quite interesting to see them side-by-side. My parents had no interest in pets nor animals in general, so it wasn’t a learned behavior. Keep in mind, too, I grew up in a pre-internet world in a small town with very limited access to television, film and books (until I was of school age). I was left to my own imagination, and it was - has always been - filled with horses of all kinds and colors. I am wired in this beautiful, fantastical way, to carry a deep love for horses.
