Butterfly

"Butterfly," 9" x 12", acrylics on museum quality panel, accented with gold leaf, depicting a lively and delicate little filly in a sea of analogous spring-like color. This personality packed original painting is $649, with complimentary shipping inside the US.  Can I ship it to your home? let me know . Butterfly might look familiar - she's gone through several incarnations over the last 18 months. Some paintings take longer than others to be seen to fruition, and often I recognize that a piece isn't complete, but I don't know exactly what it needs. So I have to just be patient. Meanwhile, back at the homefront, another snow day and another sick day (poor Princess). Everyone else is working night shifts, so I escaped earlier for some fresh air. I loaded up on new reads at the library. Stopped for an armload of fresh flowers. Also bought cookies and a case of wine. It could be a long weekend. And they are predicting more snow for us n...

Legs, done!

ABOVE "Legs," 24" x 36", acrylics on museum quality panel, portrait of an Arabian filly. There's layers of marks here that one really has to get in close to fully appreciate, and they build up a remarkable play between lost and found edges. I've included a detail below so that you can get a sense of how varied and subtle the surface is. This painting is $4299 with complimentary US s&h directly to your door. This is a chestnut filly, so she's growing up sassy and opinionated, like all chestnut filly's do. She is looking for a home that is equally sassy - if you think it might be yours,  let me know . For those interested in the creation of Legs, there are  in process photos online .  Thanks for your interest in my artwork, Kim ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Legs, in process

"Legs," 24" x 36", acrylics on museum quality panel, portrait of an Arabian filly. She's a chestnut filly, so she's destined to grow up sassy and opinionated. This piece will be offered to a select audience when completed. If you are interested, please let me know . We established that yesterday's easel time was worthless. I couldn't do anything right. And my inner critic had at me about it all last night, too, saying horribly mean things despite my feeding her chocolate. I mean, I stuffed it in her mouth, Ghirardelli dark chocolate, the good stuff. I couldn't shut her up. Today, though, today was a fresh start. I threw yesterday's 6" square panel into the "Paint Over Pile" with great pleasure, then unwrapped a 24"x36" panel and started a nearly lifesized foal portrait.  Because nobody tells me I don't know how to paint. You can follow along with the progress of this one online if you wis...

On the Turf I

"On the Turf I," 6" x 8", acrylics on museum quality panel, starring a chestnut Thoroughbred race horse and jockey in full stride. This piece is $329 (which includes s&h inside the US). Inquiries may always  come to me , and thank you so much.  Running with an idea. Last week I got the idea to paint individual running horses on small panels. Things got a little crazier when that idea grew into a double diptych, "Tail Lights ." And yet I still very much wanted to paint these little guys at an individual level. And so I have!  Above is the first of a new series** where I will study propulsion and power and balance inside the horses' stride. I am wasting no time in getting going here - my second piece,  "On the Turf II" is nearly completed, and later this afternoon I will start "On the Dirt." (**Working in a series is a fantastic way to fully explore an idea. It gives the artist multiple op...

Stallion

"Stallion," 16" x 20" x 3/4", acrylics on museum quality cradeled panel (no need to frame!), depicting a Thoroughbred stallion (inspired by Sydney's Candy at WinStar Farms ). This painting is available for $649 - inquire directly to me . In process photos  here. NOTE: "Stallion" has been entered in the 2015 Equine Jubilee exhibition, and as such, will now be available for purchase directly through the show coordinators. The exhibition will run from August 31st - October 16th. Additional information will follow once I have it. Artistic Growth - It's a natural pathway, just like with learning any other process. A dozen years ago, I was searching for a better understanding of color. Then I became interested in gestural brushwork and saying more with less marks. Then it turned to edges, balancing crisp refined ones with softer loss edges. And now it's sort of a free for all - I'm consciously working all of those areas i...

Chestnut, Finished

"Chestnut" 24" x 12", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a chestnut mare with a little bit of flash. And some glare on the far right - my apologies - with the glossy ground, this is a very difficult piece to photograph, and I'll have to get her done professionally! This painting can be yours for $1499, which includes s&h inside the US. There's a mess of in process photos  here, including detail shots. Inquiries may come directly to me .  This piece is my new all time favorite. Here's why. The color is a bit flatter in this photograph than it is in person. This painting is vibrant and delicious! That dark ground? It's really a sea of blue to green. And those pinks in her shoulder? I teared up a little over them. Yeah, I'm a color geek. The movement is true. I can feel her stepping forward, I can see the sun glistening off her muscles, and I can hear her feet hit the ground. The brushwork looks tigh...

Chestnut, In Process

"Chestnut" 24" x 12", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a chestnut mare with a little bit of flash. This painting can be yours for $1499, which includes s&h inside the US. There's a mess of in process photos   here, including some detail shots. Inquires may come directly to me .  You may have noticed I'm sharing more in process paintings lately. This is because I have made a conscious choice to work in a larger scale, and that means I can't always finish a painting in one day. This is an important piece of my growth as an artist, but I know it's not nearly as fun to see unfinished works all the time, too. Please bear with me as I work through some kinks and figure out the best way to handle this. Would you rather I posted less frequently, but only shared completed works? or do you prefer the regular updates, even if some of the paintings are unresolved? Thanks for weighing in! And thanks, as alwa...

Kentucky Derby Week - Big Red

"Big Red," 12" x 12", acrylics on museum quality panel, depicting a retired Thoroughbred from Old Friends at Cabin Creek in upstate New York. This painting is available for $599 to the first one asking nicely, and proceeds will benefit the Old Friends. VIEW IN PROCESS PHOTOS SOLD (thank you!) Last summer I visited Old Friends Cabin Creek  and learned about their mission firsthand - providing dignified retirement for racehorses. The farm is staffed entirely with volunteers.  It was moving to hear the stories of their residents, and every single horse appeared happy, healthy, and well loved. I took many photos but very poor notes, and cannot figure out who this fellow is. Maybe the folks at Cabin Creek can tell me? Meanwhile, I asked for title suggestions - they are  here .  Thanks as always for following along with my artwork, Kim ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com
