I’m enjoying painting the equine form quite a bit - there’s two more in the works still…… I was reading about the Moon and Pleiades’ (also known as the Seven Sisters) lunar occultation happening this evening. The shadow of the moon will fall over some of the stars in this constellation, temporarily blacking them out. I thought it was so cool! Then later I realized that this little painting, which had previously been just the horse and clouds, was the perfect candidate for a garland of stars. Questions may always come   to me . make her yours This is a fascinating piece/painting in that she has had multiple incarnations (meaning paintings or versions stacked overtop each other).   The Red Dress was one of my tree studies from winter 2022. Then she became   Star , which oddly enough I signed on December 5, 2022. Star morphed into   Champagne last winter when I was working on a series of floral filled equines. And on a recent blizzardy day I invited Champagne to the easel and she became Chocolate Rose. Each of the iterations has informed the next. I don’t totally wipe out/gesso overtop the prior painting - I simply start with a new idea and integrate it into what’s already on the surface.   Blue Skies and Sunshine   Blue Skies and Sunshine, commissioned acrylic painting on 30”x40” cradled wood panel, private collection (thank you!).  I don’t do many commissions anymore. I got painfully burned out  from over a decade of daily pet portraits   (www.PaintingaDogaDay.com) , but also because I am now a Disrupted Realism artist creating fractured, expressive work which doesn’t lend itself to preserving a likeness in the way most think of portraiture. So when my newest collector approached me in late March about a portrait of her horse, I steeled myself to say no. I read her proposal, and despite not having a blessed idea about how I might paint him, I had a full body response to the project.  She, in turn, granted me full artistic license. I could paint Larry however he showed up. So I got my brushes readied. This painting is a rework. I was in love with the prior version,  Indigo Apricot , at the time I created her, and she’s been hanging in the studio ever since. The last couple weeks, though, I began to see things differently. I itched to go back into the painting and make some changes. In artist speak this is called “seeing with fresh eyes.” Fresh eyes are an important tool in that they help the artist critically view a work of art and design adjustments as it progresses. Ironically, fresh eyes are tough to maintain when one is in the thick of creating said work. I’ve had this painting idea for a long time - that of a rose tattooed horse. I’ve tried to paint her a couple times with little success. You see, my paintings show up as a glittery thread, not as fully formed ideas. So I have to sort of unearth and then breathe life into them. Some require multiple excursions. It’s a strange thing to try and explain. I truly don’t know how any of my paintings will land - I simply show up and honor that initial scrap of glittery thread as best I can. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. So this time when this mare began to take shape, I realized that while interpreting this thread, I made several wrong assumptions.
