Having just returned from Denver, Colorado, last week you know the next new paintings will be inspired by the Rocky Mountains. I didn’t actually see fox while there, but I did see lots of elk, a couple mountain goats, and plenty of other awe inspiring things. One unexpected thing we encountered was smoke from the Canadian wildfires. And while that wasn’t on my mind when painting, I realized after I signed her that this little painting was a living ember. Informed by the snow and ice storm we got over the weekend (10" of snow overtop a couple inches of slush!), the resulting shoveling, scraping and limb cleanup that followed, and then recovery time spent on the couch watching them gather at the feeders, this painting is all about the last few days here in Michigan. She is just sitting, waiting for it to pass, holding her head high. I started her within days of the Israeli-Palestinian war, but it would be unfair to say that she also wasn't informed by other world events and political unrest. This painting is dense with texture and infused with prayer. The surface is scarred, as are the fox and rabbit, as are the cultures at war. I hope to have conveyed an acceptance or reconciliation, the hope of a new era, despite decades of ignorance. I realized that my paintings have been prayers for a long time.   Remnant II (Fox), 16x20, $850 plus s&h to   the first asking nicely . Questions may come to me.   There's been lots of drawing happening in the studio. Particularly memory drawing, much of it blind (meaning I do not have a reference at hand). Some of the drawings feel like they need color and swooshy paint, and those ones get invited to the easel for a bit more attention. I'm calling them Remnants. With this Remnant series I draw with my eyes closed, both hands on the surface of the painting and feel my way into Fox. Then I lay out earthy colors and fill her with wisps of landscape. Did you know that the animals in my paintings come from my dreams? and that I dream of foxes several times a week? This time around I was walking my dogs at The Biltmore Estate. We were mostly alone - nobody else physically present, but I could feel a palpable energy swirling about. If I squinted really hard, I could see faint silhouettes of people in the sky, murmering to each other. Their voices harmonized with birdsong and the fountain. And there was a little fox walking with us - she was dancing about with the three dogs, teaching them how to disapparate with a little head movement and tail flick.
