There is something about this color palette that is so soothing to me - and to be honest, I think it is in part because I have so many pivotal life experiences that happened to involve exactly these colors. I think it merits mentioning, too, that while I could paint the landscape representationally (and did so last week via   little pieces full of color notes  which are available here ), I prefer (at least at this moment in time) to paint more of an experiential landscape. She began as a fox, then sky bloomed from her face, with an explosion of peonies growing from the lower edge into a ascension of petals off the top edge. Then a little water's edge landscape crept in too. In the process of trying to meld them all together I got overwhelmed. I asked the fox, "fox, what if you run off for for a bit while I resolve the organic elements?" Fox thought that was a good idea. When she did return, she decided hiding was far more fun. Which truly upset me at the time, because after   yesterday's painting , I was dying to get in the studio and start pushing paint. But something happened. While I was shoveling (and muttering under my breath about why it seemed like a good idea back in July to sell our snow blower in the garage sale), I noticed the lace like patterns of bare branches agains the fresh snow. In honor of what should be Kentucky Derby Week, I will share some of my original equine work created over the years. This is something I've done since 2007 - celebrating one of the biggest weeks in horseracing (at least here in the states) by highlighting horses in art. This is another Siren turned Daydream - there's something fascinating that happens when one uses a previous painting as a jumping off point for something new directly overtop. Contrary to what some may think, I do not simply coat the previous painting with an even layer of gesso and begin on a clean slate. Instead, I allow what was there before to interact with what reveals itself as the new design builds, responding intuitively (you can't plan this sort of thing!) and all these happy accidents happen. Approximately 1/3 of the surface of this Daydream remains untouched from the previous Siren incarnation.
