"Find Grace" (above) and "Just Breathe" (below), both 14" x 17", acrylics on bristol board, both in private collections. I call these mantra paintings - I start with a simple text, scrawled in giant letters on the page, and then I begin to layer marks and doodles overtop until I can pick out shapes and forms. This process is a visual meditation exercise that keeps me centered (I also do mantra paintings with not-so-nice text underneath - it's all about working through one's emotions). Ruby, one of the finalists for a free portrait - talk about beautiful eyes! That's the subject line of the email I just sent out to the 12 finalists in this year's Valentine Painting Giveaway . There was well over 100 entries received this year (and sadly, they are still arriving, even after the deadline has passed). I have spent the entire day looking at photos, tagging and flagging and resorting and painting each of them in my head. It's been a grand old time! Thank you to all who sent in photos - the choices were varied and inspiring and heartwarming. Nothing tells a more compelling story about love than the slideshow I watched this morning. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to picking up my brushes on Friday and painting someone a most excellent Valentine. Which one would you choose to paint?   Detail of "Shreen," 10" square, commissioned Cocker Spaniel portrait done in acrylics on a panel, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries may come  to me .       Shreen is quite the extraordinary dog!   She's got her family trained to not wake her, even when she's in the middle of the bed. And even when she's on a pillow.   She's got a warm lap for the duration of any movie or television program.   She takes her people for walks (not the other way around!!).   She's the favorite, despite being in a multi-dog household where no favorites are allowed.   And now she's the only one with a Dog a Day portrait.
