My parents had no interest in pets nor animals in general, so it wasn’t a learned behavior. Keep in mind, too, I grew up in a pre-internet world in a small town with very limited access to television, film and books (until I was of school age). I was left to my own imagination, and it was - has always been - filled with horses of all kinds and colors. I am wired in this beautiful, fantastical way, to carry a deep love for horses. Puppy Butt, pictured above, is one of my all time favorite Dog a Day paintings because it provided a critical Ah-Ha moment. It's a little piece, 6" square, that hammered in a big lesson. He sold right away, but you can order reproductions and other items through   my FineArtAmerica storefront . I remember painting it - keep in mind that after more than 1300 Dog a Day paintings, I don't recall actively creating too many of them. I remember being excited to start, so excited that I jumped right in, sweeping the background in with a wide brush I hadn't bothered to clean or wipe off. My color became grayed out and muted color. I cursed myself for being lazy (it's my greatest painting vice), but then I said, hey, lazy girl, you might have just done something pretty cool. Laying the background colors down with a dirty brush mucked them up (I work in layers, and paint the entire background first before putting the dog/foreground shape in). They were...

But it was later pointed out** that the painting could be improved - my story wasn't as clear as it could have been. You see the gesture of this horse, which was paramount to me, materializing as she approached the viewer, was not strong enough. Nor was her connection with the flowers explained - that they have taken root and are pulling sustenance from her existence, even if it is imagined. I got a full day in the studio, complete with loud music and very few interruptions, which is how I prefer to work (but that doesn't mean I always get what I want). And magic happened. I started laying marks down, and the painting pretty much told me what to do. The thing I'm most pleased with is her eye - it is SO alive and SO calm - and the little reflective bits of truth that glimmer about her profile ( best seen here, in a detail shot) . Protect, 15" x 30", acrylics on gallery stretched canvas, $799 plus s&h. Inquiries may come  to me . I've been playing with an acrylic based encaustic-like process - basically suspending my pigments in a translucent, pourable medium sharing many of the same properties as melted wax. This allows me to blend, scratch into, layer, suspend, dribble and do all sorts of delightful things with the paint. So much to learn!!

The second generation of Sirens (you can see   the first ones here ) has me thinking about the challenges of life. I can't paint these things without first visualizing them, and therein lies the challenge, because we typically cannot "see" an individual's struggle. I've spent lots of time imagining fear, conflict, faith, hope, grace as I jump into these new paintings. I welcome your thoughts - is this one successful? what else would you like to see me tackle? From the historic "Four Sixes Ranch" in Texas, comes the mare Mostfamouseromance, and this year's baby filly by Hez Our Secret. The baby is a promising future racehorse, and they are hoping to register her as Scandalous Romance, but for now she's just "a little romance." Now what to paint next? The black horse is a uniquely powerful amulet. 24" x 20", acrylics on panel, sold (thank you!). Inquiries may come to me. I was asked to paint a black horse, and somewhere along the way I was seduced by her magic. It's not the first time she's done this - Shadow was destined for another fate altogether when her current owner bought her from a kill pen. And as often happens with rescued animals, they reciprocate by rescuing their new owners.

They were one of my favorite things to read as a child - I loved comparing similar tales from differing cultures. I've had The Frog Prince in my head for over a week now. Finally able to get around to painting him. And I just might do it again.......
