Raccoons kept popping into my brain for no apparent reason the last week or so, so I decided yesterday afternoon to give one a try. She got drawn in overtop an older painting, which immediately contributed to the blue palette. The feverfew is from my yard, and the peonies are inspired by artificial ones I set up for another painting (now long abandoned/something else, but the flowers were so pretty I left them out. Translation: I'm lazy.) My relentless choice of animals as my subject matter - even as an elementary school student - has taught me draftsmanship and an intimate understanding of their psyche, anatomy and presence. My deep connection with the natural world has brought an appreciation for the magic that our earth delivers on a daily basis. My longstanding commitment to daily painting - since 2006 - has brought with it a true knowledge of what my materials can do. This is another Siren turned Daydream - there's something fascinating that happens when one uses a previous painting as a jumping off point for something new directly overtop. Contrary to what some may think, I do not simply coat the previous painting with an even layer of gesso and begin on a clean slate. Instead, I allow what was there before to interact with what reveals itself as the new design builds, responding intuitively (you can't plan this sort of thing!) and all these happy accidents happen. Approximately 1/3 of the surface of this Daydream remains untouched from the previous Siren incarnation. There's an echo of the previous siren figure behind the glazes (lower left), but only if you knew she was there to begin with. And the (mostly green) color from...

"Snowshoe," from the Florus Animalum series, a companion piece to last week's "Snowdrop," 24" x 30", acrylics on panel, depicting a snowshoe hare and a crown of similarly colored florals. A commentary on global warming. And a beautiful example of white not being white. "Sonny," 12" x 46", acrylics on panel, featuring a Meerkat at attention, with a mess of yellow daisies, $1999 (with complimentary shipping inside the US). Inquiries may come  to me . Funny story about Sonny. I went to Home Depot (with paint in my hair and all over me, because when inspiration hits, who's got time to clean up?), bought an 8 foot long panel, and had them cut it in half. Took both pieces (48" square) out to my car, only to find out that they wouldn't fit. Schlepped both pieces back to the lumber guy and asked him to trim so they would fit. He took a foot off each one. Which left me with 2 tall skinny panels for 2 tall skinny compositions like Sonny's. Now I need to think of another one. Both very much in process, above an untitled (and larger than life) portrait of The Princess, 36" x 48" (gallery stretched canvas), and below, a life sized self portrait, 18" x 24" (panel). Multi media paintings, my own personal collection. While cleaning out the fish bowl yesterday, I realized that it would make a great vase (started one of those too, with goldfish in the bowl and swimming amongst the roses!), and then began thinking of other non-traditional containers for flowers. That was when my head exploded, which I tried to paint. And I was up most of the night working on it. Then I made Anna my next victim. I have mostly thought of painting florals the last couple weeks. I cannot turn my brain off - it is constantly going, even when I'm not at my easel. I'm really going to have to reel things in soon and paint a couple of dogs!! Meanwhile, the pieces are piling up from the online class I'm taking - I need a bigg...
