She came from a well of seemingly impossible circumstances that brought me to my knees the last few weeks. There are so many bits inspiring her - the revelation of difficult truths, the rending and destruction of things held precious, the healing power of a hug, uncertain diagnoses… all just a snippet of what was on my mind as I painted. I envisioned this painting as a pile of birds inside a pile of blooms, a metaphor of mother-daughter relationships borne of a vision that arrived while at a memorial surrounded by the ancillary moms who helped raise my own now adult kids. That idea, though, apparently is for another painting - this piece started out in that direction...

A continuation of the exploration of layering drawings overtop last summer’s abstract painting, Chickadee Confetti is definitely a product of cross-pollination. She is fed by what I learned painting  Floret   (my most recent piece) and  Levitate  (from a few weeks ago) and the scads of drawings I’ve been making nonstop since last fall. When one shows up and does the work, over and over again, with the intention of learning and playing (as opposed to making something intended to hang on the wall), fantastic things happen. Ideas bubble forth, connections are made, skills are honed. And then when it’s time to try and make something intended to hang on the wall, there is a freshness and palpably unique feel to what emerges. ...

Gossamer is a further exploration of a new approach to starting a piece - that being improvisational drawing. I discovered this process while playing around and building content for my students (this is the Summer of Play in my online classroom). It’s a lot like daydreaming with a tool in hand - whether that be pencil or paintbrush. Which leads to my next point - I will be teaching how to connect pencil and paintbrush at a new in person workshop hosted by the International Society of Experimental Artists at their annual symposium. The sketch was first inspired by the little calla plant on my kitchen table, then of course I had to add some chickadees overtop. I drew them in using another in process bird painting as my resource. Then it was a matter of playing with the shard of blue sky and that rich violet shadows. Finally, I opted to add in silhouettes/leaf patterns from my roses. I started adding them to fox paintings late last year, but in this piece I decided they deserved center stage. Informed by the snow and ice storm we got over the weekend (10" of snow overtop a couple inches of slush!), the resulting shoveling, scraping and limb cleanup that followed, and then recovery time spent on the couch watching them gather at the feeders, this painting is all about the last few days here in Michigan. So this one had an interesting progression. FIrst she was just the rainbow fox, built up over the course of several weeks from blind memory drawing (no reference photo, no looking at the painting while drawing her). She felt lonely - I thought it had to do with what her eyes were locked on. Then I realized that she needed some drama - value changes - on the bottom half. So I pulled out a drawing with a little chickadee that I particularly loved, and redrew the bird and a few branches while looking at the drawing and not the painting. It was exactly what she needed!! I then added glasses to Fox (because I'm starting to think she might be me and not a separate entity), played with softening some edges, and signed her. Which truly upset me at the time, because after   yesterday's painting , I was dying to get in the studio and start pushing paint. But something happened. While I was shoveling (and muttering under my breath about why it seemed like a good idea back in July to sell our snow blower in the garage sale), I noticed the lace like patterns of bare branches agains the fresh snow. And the birds were huddled together, in the densest part of the trees and shrubs, giving me a piece of their minds, too. So that is what I painted today. And there just might be more of these.
