April ‘25 Studio News

Three portraits, done in oil, through an in person workshop I took with Alyssa Monks. She blew my mind, just as I had hoped!

It’s been a month since my last newsletter, which seems unheard of in these parts, but here we are! I thought I’d take a minute to update you on all that’s been happening around here.

  • I traveled to California to take an oil painting workshop with Alyssa Monks. It was a transformative experience and will take me a bit to unpack and move through. The dust isn’t even close to settling, and I already feel a shift in how I am working in the studio. If you have the opportunity to study with her, please do it!!

  • Shortly after tying up that workshop, I teamed with Kara Bullock Art School to film my 2025 online course. “Bloom, Expand Possibilities” leads students through the creation of two acrylic paintings blending Fox and Floral. Bloom includes modules on integrating line into your work, how to paint a lifelike eye, deeper insight on working intuitively, an analysis of various references/resources and lots of great color content. Enrollment opens mid May, with the course launching June 11,2025 (I’ll send another reminder out as the dates approach). You will want to sign up and get started in June, as there will be a live launch party via zoom prior to class starting, and new to this course, a second live Q&A (also via zoom) for students about 6 weeks into the material.

  • We also filmed a mini-course on developing a personal color palette, walking students through intentional structure of a limited system with tips on how to work and expand it over time. If you are looking to add a unique and distinctive color palette to your work, this is the course for you! It will also be available in June 2025.

  • Intuitive Painting, my first online course marrying Bear with Landscape, remains available through Kara’s site. What an honor to learn this course is one of her best sellers! You’ve still got time to work through Intuitive Painting before Bloom kicks off.

  • After 7 years I am retiring from my board member position with The Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. While I will miss the work and leadership opportunity, it was time to allow fresh ideas to the table. The two women assuming my responsibilities are perfectly suited for this role. I have been working on easing the transition for all parties involved, myself included. And I look forth to being an active member and continuing to support DSWPS’s mission.

  • I have two paintings juried into the latest Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors exhibition, which opens Saturday April 26th at The Anton Art Center in Mt. Clemens, MI. Perhaps I’ll see you there?

  • I have really been enjoying painting all sorts of skies since my return home, both in acrylic and oils. The variety of approaches between the two mediums is giving me many different ways to speak to the various ideas that are bubbling up in the studio. These thoughts have been part of my Studio Vlog, one of the benefits inside the Independent Study tier of my student membership (on Patreon).

  • And finally, yesterday I presented to the Detroit Palette and Brush Club, speaking about how I integrate my life with my art, walking the audience through a recent painting, and talking a little about what oil painting has taught me. After returning home, I decided to record this same lecture and make it available to the general public - it’s on my YouTube channel, Painting My Way Through Life.

So, despite my not sharing paintings lately (what I’ve finished is part of the upcoming online courses, so you’ll get to see them soon enough), I have been pretty darned busy! I hope to have new work and a new art journaling session to share with you soon.

Thanks so much for your interest in my artwork.

Love you, Kim

Picture Book "A Dog Named Blue" - now available!!

The cover of "A Dog Named Blue," now available from Blurb publishers. When I first painted Amelia I never imagined that she would be re-christened "Blue" and inspire a book. In her defense, Amelia had a number of other partners in crime - animals who's portraits seemed to fall into a specific color category and prompt color-centric names. In typical ADD fashion, my brain started spinning 100mph. What if I turned those muses' paintings into a picture book for animal loving kids? I shared my idea with three friends in the industry, and they eagerly offered their expertise. I am truly indebted to them. Illustrator and author Matt Faulkner and children's book author and literacy expert Kristen Remenar edited an early version of the draft. They suggested key plot/conceptual changes that made it oodles better. Designer Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson worked her magic, pairing the images with perfectly color...

Dear Copyright Thieves

Dear Copyright Thieves,   Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's free for the taking. So let's just stop pretending the internet is a free-for-all.   Don't play the card that you didn't know - that's insulting. And don't also tell me that you meant to follow up and get permission but never got a chance to. That's insulting too. And by the way, don't you have a copyright protection notice on your own site?   And don't even try and point the finger at a third party who commissioned you to make a copy of my painting - again, an insult - you and I both know the difference between a reference photo and a painting.   And don't tell me that I asked for it because I share my artwork on the internet. I share my paintings and ideas and the stories behind them so as to encourage others to pursue  their own passions . I do not share so that those lacking integrity and morals can copy and market the images as their own...

Tabby Kit

"Tabby Kit," 5" x 7", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a tiny little orange striped guy from Morgue File . This painting can be yours for $289, which includes s&h inside the US. And in case you didn't see it, a little doodle of him is also available for sale here . Inquires may come directly to me .  Although it certainly doesn't FEEL like spring here (snow and ice and wind chills, brr!), I can tell that spring is coming. The mercury is rising a wee bit each day and the days are getting longer and brighter. Over the weekend we drove with the moonroof open just to feel the sun's meager and oh-so-very-welcome warmth (although the heat in the car was cranked, too, in the interest of full disclosure!). I wanted to work with spring-like colors today, and this little guy was still on my mind , so I grabbed a small panel and got to work. Of course, I also have Poppy to finish and some changes to make to another po...
