This is another one that began last August. I loved the start - beautiful line work and sworls of energy in a predominantly light filled space - but couldn’t really see or feel where she was going from there.
So she sat at the back of my studio and waited patiently.
And then, while on vacation, I was standing in all these ancient Italian basilicas looking up at the frescos and mosaics of saints ascending through skies and it hit me. This Bear is sacred, like every animal I paint she represents the holiness in our world. And Bears in particular to me represent Mothers, Protectors, Nurturers. Therefore she needed similar treatment.
When I got back to the studio, I wrapper her in a royal cape made up of veiled sunlight, earth and billowy skies. And of course, a golden halo as well, that throws little specks of refracted light.
My final touch was to paint her eyes blue, like my grandmothers. So now she is the vastness of our world blessing you with a grandmother’s love.
