When I feel a bit shaken, I return to my comforts. A blanket warm from the dryer, mashed potatoes, my 80s and 90s playlists, that sort of thing.
I have felt shaken up quite a bit for a long time. Including in the studio, which is a space that usually settles me. With my art the discomfort has been because I’m actively growing, trying all sorts of new to me approaches and processes. This is exciting but also very unsettling.
The recent Bears were pushing me into important territory, but it was a lot for a long window of time and I needed a breather. So I returned to my comfort art - Horse. Taking this subject, which has been my balm since earliest memories, and introducing her to some of the new practices I had been trying recently with Bear was reassuring and a little bit familiar. It renewed faith in my muse when I witnessed Atmosphere come life at the end of my brushes.
The whole time I was painting, random lyrics and melodies popped up - I also had been painting without music, something new to me, allowing my internal dialogue to take a seat front and center. I didn’t connect the phrases that showed up to any one song, just noticed as the fragments drifted through. It wasn’t until I sat down to title her, settling on Atmosphere (because of her drizzley, foggy atmospheric space), that I realized the song in my head was Drops of Jupiter (which also features the word Atmosphere prominantly in the first verse).
This is a song I’ve always equated with loss and grief - something I am feeling on the daily anymore. But my painting, threaded with pink, is also about rebirth, which I love.

Creativity documents our voices and builds community, something profoundly important right now. How can you help elevate and keep artists’ voices alive? It’s simple:
engage with your favorite artist via social media
share what they are creating with your friends
take a course and hone your own voice
purchase original art or reproductions (see below)
fill their tip jar (let’s be real, it’s all about Treats for Blue, the studio dog)
Your support keeps the arts alive, which means future generations will understand our perspectives long after we are gone. Thank you.
