I was born with a seemingly absurd passion for animals, particularly horses. My parents had no interest in pets nor animals in general, so it wasn’t a learned behavior. Keep in mind, too, I grew up in a pre-internet world in a small town with very limited access to television, film and books (until I was of school age). I was left to my own imagination, and it was - has always been - filled with horses of all kinds and colors.
I am wired in this beautiful, fantastical way, to carry a deep love for horses. Over the years this love has grown to encompass the entirety of our natural world. My art has evolved to reflect this - animals as vessels holding landscape elements close to their core.
When this mare first showed up, I saw her as a portal into the deep woods. She beckoned me into their depths, reminding me of my early wanderings around our isolated neighborhood. And somehow along the way, the twining linework and leaf shapes inside the painting became a graceful network pulsing with life. It’s simultaneously complicated, chaotic and insanely beautiful.
I tucked (painted) a mourning dove feather into the left hand side of the painting (profile edge, so not pictured) as a prayer for peace. There’s also a lucky penny hidden inside the front of the painting.
Intravenous is my prayer for love, grace, peace, and a little bit of luck for our world.
You are invited to view Intravenous on my website, inside a room setting and up close, like nose to the panel up close. The link to purchase is also there.
