Last week I was utterly delighted to see snowdrops peeking through in my garden  particularly after another spell of yechy weather - a major ice storm, lots of melt, then over 8" of fresh snow followed by lots more melt. Come March I am so ready for spring. I'm tired of the damp and always being cold. I crave a boost of color, something a bit brighter than the muted tones and high contrast of winter days. But March gives us a peek at warmer weather, then rips it away. She is a relentless tease and a horrible influence on April. So I celebrated the snowdrop. And I might just continue to do more. That's how these pieces were made. Over a period of about 6 months I layered paint and line work, scraped back in to the surface, smudged and smeared things together. I also leaned in to one of my new favorite mark making processes - something I call primal scribbling. And yup, it's just as it sounds!   Equinox, 18"x24", acrylic on flat panel, $1000 plus s&h. Link to purchase is below. A couple years back I had this seemingly brilliant idea of painting a transparent rabbit growing from a tree canopy. When I get these ideas, I can't actually see them in my head. It's my habit to just dive in painting, trusting that during the process the details will coalesce.  So while working on this tree canopy rabbit I arrived at an mid point that I found oddly beautiful but very much unresolved. I had no idea where she was going, but I was fascinated. I could have stopped there and regrouped, but I didn't. Instead I opted to push forward with the tree concept. And I wrecked the painting. To this day I have regretted that. Earlier this week I decided to consciously recreate that middle and fascinating point of the ruined painting. And this time the resolution (NOT the tree canopy!) was so simple to see! The concept fit nearly perfectly into the Rococo sky format painting...

No stealth pinches right before the shutter clicks. No bunny ears or duck lips or awkward expressions. No silent but deadly farts (I'm having flashbacks to a particularly hilarious portrait session with my four brothers).  I enjoyed imagining the dialogue between these foxes. Their body language evolved and shifted as their storyline grew over the course of the year that this one was in process. Like I said, it's grueling. I've had some very lucid dreams lately. And a recurring character threaded through them. A fiery black horse. So I invited her to the easel. I expected to get her blocked in (what I call the first pass on a painting) and begin to decipher her message over a period of time. Teton the painting shares her name with the second tallest mountain in the United States.   And what I didn't know until today is that the Teton range is made up of some of the oldest rock inside the US -  2.7 billion years old. An appropriate synchronicity for a mother bear painting, as mothers have been around (in varying forms) for a pretty significant amount of time too. Each of my paintings start with a "what if" And Steadfast began with "what if the blue sky inside  Fragonard (the painting immediately prior to her start)  expanded to fill more of the spirit animal vessel?" I set off to find out what that might look like, and along the way began to ponder about the constants in our lives that we don't really consciously think about. Like a blue sky. I am obsessed with these billowy skies My favorite art history professor despised  Rococo paintings . They quickened my heart, but I pushed that away as he berated their sentimental, over the top, flouncy layers of clouds, foliage and fluttering textiles. After all, he was the expert, right?  Recently I rediscovered them and remembered how much they pleased me. Apologies, Dr. van Liere, but I can no longer ignore their pull. Each spread is lush with various design ideas. The weather forecast** is for blue skies......   **metaphorically speaking, because, actually, we are under a winter storm watch. Here is the link for  her. Jean-Honore Fragonard is one of my favorite painters. He created the most luscious, bright skies. I have a couple ongoing rabbit paintings here in the studio with skyscapes directly influenced by him. And one morning I thought, what if the sky was INSIDE the spirit animal in lieu of the expected top-of-the-panel location..... and thus was born Fragonard. There's a story behind Delta......   There is a lovely little creek in our town that is home to a significant number of trout. One of our favorite stops on our daily dog walks (when the weather is warmer) involves lingering at their feeding and spawning holes. I so enjoy watching the interplay of looking into the waters depth while also seeing the reflection of the sky and the objects surrounding the creek's edges. It's a living painting. The momma bear in this painting was birthed of sketches done from  the bear cam  in Katmai National Park. It's my own life drawing session, watching them fish, lounge, groom themselves, lumber about. Now those rivers are much more active than our little creek here at home, but I love to imagine how they also teem with life under the surface. I married the two experiences together in Delta.   Magma, 24"x24", acrylic on a flat aluminum panel, $1600 plus s&h to   the first asking nicely . Questions can always come   to me. Aluminum?   Several of the artists I follow have been working on aluminum panels, and I wanted to give them a try. I prefer a smooth surface, and aluminum is that and more! The reflective surface bounces light back to the viewer, making the paint seem all the brighter. There is a lovely lustrous quality to this piece as a result. Also, those lighted gray lines? they are exposed metal, which completely reflects the light as the viewer moves past, making the piece feel even more alive. Here is the link for   MAGMA .   Family, image 33"x45", paper a bit larger, mixed media on paper, $800 plus s&h to   the first asking nicely . Will ship rolled. I can also include a magnetic scroll style hanging system, but recommend ultimately this piece be set behind glass for preservation. And of course, questions can always come   to me. I started 2 of these large scale drawings last year.    They were pinned to my studio wall, and every week or so I'd sit with them for a bit and add marks. The accumulation of layers over time created quite a historied feel to the surface that I quite like. My original intent was to include them in the Fox Medicine show last October, but they had other plans, clearly. One is still in process, but this one, Family, is ready to head out into the world.   Obsidian, 24x30x1-1/2, acrylic on Bara Woodshaping handmade cradled panel, $2000 plus s&h to   the first asking nicely . And of course, questions can always come   to me. I am exploring the depth inside an earthy palette   which by no coincidence also mirrors the view through my windows. This January is a bit different than previous ones because we have no snow, but I am fascinated by the range of browns and grays to be found in the foliage and frozen ground. Also, I filmed the making of this piece in real time and am editing the footage down to manageable length. I plan to offer a live paint and lecture experience via zoom in early February. Stay tuned.
