Feel free to  reach out  and share some love. After a summer of big deadlines, short work weeks, and feeling as though I would never be caught up, there was a recent almost seismic shift. The paint has been flowing, my muse is ecstatic, and I can feel ideas starting to coalesce in new ways. And, the progress at the easel has not overshadowed other business related tasks. Is it possible I have found the secret to balance, at least for this moment? If so, I’ll take it. Obsessed with contour drawing, I’m exploring the varied ways line can show up in a painting, and coming up with some exciting techniques. With Lapis, I particularly enjoyed traveling along the spectrum from representational to arbitrary lines, using a variety of tools and approaches.  Lapis has spawned two other pieces, a baby bear I’ve been sharing over

Feel free to  reach out  and share some love. What if I applied the bird and flower concept I’ve been smitten with the last couple weeks to a fox? That’s what I was curious about when I started this one.  I began by painting a cloud filled sky, then drew in a fox in profile, intending to crown her with a glorious purple dahlia. But she had other plans. She enticed me with that dancing edge inside her body on the left, and once I indulged that, the idea of a flower dissolved.  As an intuitive painter, I don’t allow myself to force anything into a piece. I’ve learned that when I do, the painting suffers - it loses some of it’s spirit and magic. So while I start with an idea, that’s just the launching point. I let that bit go when the painting shows me something else I couldn’t have dreamt up if I tried. So that i

Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in.   Leonard Cohen The bears showed up again the last couple days - they asked to be invited back to the easel, and seriously, who’s going to say no to a bear? Not me! This doesn’t mean the birds are done in the least - just that the bears were ready for their closeup, so to speak.  Maybe there will be a bear and bird combo in one of these new pieces. I truly never know where the painting process is going to take me - that’s one of the things I love the most about intuitive work. However, bear and bird were a great combo in this early Talisman painting,  Bare Branches , so why not have another try at it? I’ll be open minded. Meanwhile, you can v

Floret

Floret view her on my website Floret, original acrylic on panel, 24”x18”, private collection (thank you!).** I always welcome questions -   send them my way !   In case you haven’t noticed, I have been obsessed with layering line and painted shapes. This is a fascination I’ve had for years now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying exploring all the different ways I can combine these elements. Floret started as an abstract painting from last summer’s output. I then drew from memory overtop - at first I intended to draw a fox, but she also looked a little coyote-like. Then as I built up layers, she became stockier like a wolf. I’m ok with this sort of fluidity - I let the drawing/shapes move in whatever direction feels right for the painting. I call this “getting out of the way” - it’s an integral part of my intuitive painting process. Her face is mostly preserved from the abstract painting, and the remainder of the piece was woven in carefully as I painted so as to appear to be one unified des

Chickadee Confetti

Chickadee Confetti make her yours Chickadee Confetti, original acrylic on panel, 24”x18”, $1000 plus s&h. I always welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below). Feel free to  reach out  and share some love. A continuation of the exploration of layering drawings overtop last summer’s abstract painting, Chickadee Confetti is definitely a product of cross-pollination. She is fed by what I learned painting  Floret   (my most recent piece) and  Levitate  (from a few weeks ago) and the scads of drawings I’ve been making nonstop since last fall. When one shows up and does the work, over and over again, with the intention of learning and playing (as opposed to making something intended to hang on the wall), fantastic things happen. Ideas bubble forth, connections are made, skills are honed. And then when it’s time to try and make something intended to hang on the wall, there is a freshness and palpably unique feel to what emerges. Daily painting (or drawing or scul

Gossamer

Gossamer make her yours Gossamer, original acrylic on a cradled panel, 36”x36”x1-1/2”, sides painted so no pressing need to frame, $2900 plus s&h. I always welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below) or simply   just reach out   to share some love. Gossamer is a further exploration of a new approach to starting a piece - that being improvisational drawing. I discovered this process while playing around and building content for my students (this is the Summer of Play in my online classroom). It’s a lot like daydreaming with a tool in hand - whether that be pencil or paintbrush. Which leads to my next point - I will be teaching how to connect pencil and paintbrush at a new in person workshop hosted by the International Society of Experimental Artists at their annual symposium. The workshop is September 18-19, 2024 in Grand Haven Michigan. You can   learn more here . Meanwhile, you can view - or purchase - Gossamer   right off my website .   Let me know   if

I always welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below) or  just reach out  to share some love. Having just returned from Denver, Colorado, last week you know the next new paintings will be inspired by the Rocky Mountains. I didn’t actually see fox while there, but I did see lots of elk, a couple mountain goats, and plenty of other awe inspiring things. One unexpected thing we encountered was smoke from the Canadian wildfires. And while that wasn’t on my mind when painting, I realized after I signed her that this little painting was a living ember. Hence the title, Spark. A spark can be so much more than a literal speck of fire, and I feel that it’s the perfect title for this gem of a painting.
