This is a fascinating piece/painting in that she has had multiple incarnations (meaning paintings or versions stacked overtop each other). The Red Dresswas one of my tree studies from winter 2022. Then she became Star, which oddly enough I signed on December 5, 2022. Star morphed into Champagnelast winter when I was working on a series of floral filled equines. And on a recent blizzardy day I invited Champagne to the easel and she became Chocolate Rose.

Each of the iterations has informed the next. I don’t totally wipe out/gesso overtop the prior painting - I simply start with a new idea and integrate it into what’s already on the surface. There’s added magic in getting to work overtop an older piece - yes, a wee bit of sadness in saying goodbye to what was there, but also a celebratory dance because what was there is now elevated - dare I say metamorphosized - in to something fresh and new. So you see, there is no way Chocolate Rose would have come to be without the prior pieces.

Picture Book "A Dog Named Blue" - now available!!

The cover of "A Dog Named Blue," now available from Blurb publishers. When I first painted Amelia I never imagined that she would be re-christened "Blue" and inspire a book. In her defense, Amelia had a number of other partners in crime - animals who's portraits seemed to fall into a specific color category and prompt color-centric names. In typical ADD fashion, my brain started spinning 100mph. What if I turned those muses' paintings into a picture book for animal loving kids? I shared my idea with three friends in the industry, and they eagerly offered their expertise. I am truly indebted to them. Illustrator and author Matt Faulkner and children's book author and literacy expert Kristen Remenar edited an early version of the draft. They suggested key plot/conceptual changes that made it oodles better. Designer Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson worked her magic, pairing the images with perfectly color...
