Summer is officially over, which makes me a bit sad, as I love spending the warm days outside and taking long walks with the dogs. But I am also feeling conflicted, because autumn ushers in a season of reflection and restoration and lots of family celebrations. Here’s a peek at what I’ve been doing the last 14 weeks: hung an exhibition with The Thursday Brushes (my critique group) at   Starkweather Arts Center . Just  reach out . A few weeks back I had the pleasure of plein air painting at a horse farm. Rolling pastures, tree lined fence rows, riding arenas and sprawling barns. And then there were the tenants!! I set up outside a smaller barn set against an emerald pasture lined with ancient trees. I got to work on a painting featuring the breezeway of the barn, open at both ends, and the surrounding green. But I quickly learned that my muse had other ideas - she wanted to paint those trees, not the barn. So I gave in - it’s not worth fighting over these sorts of things, and I’m challenged enough working plein air. If trees were where my mind wandered, that’s what I was going to paint! I almost titled this one “She loves me…” after the childhood game which involved peeling petals off a bloom while reciting “she loves me, she loves me not,” until the final remaining petal determined everything. I thought quite a bit about parenting as I painted this bear cub. Each new life holds promise for something a parent literally cannot see - we feel that promise and also hold sacred own dreams for the child. Ultimately, though, the child learns who they are and discovers their purpose as they grow up. It’s our job to support them through their journey. I was thinking of this along with all of the promises we make to ourselves while raising kids or nurturing others. Those promises that push us to be more human, more vulnerable, more supportive of what we all are growing into.
