  I reserved some of my favorite fox pieces for my online collectors.   Check them out here ! fox medicine opens tonite but I couldn't stand the thought of all my online fans missing out. So I curated an offering of work just for you! These paintings are available   now,   directly   through me , via   my website . The remainder of Fox Medicine can be viewed in person at   Starkweather Arts Center in Romeo, Michigan . Their staff will facilitate purchases through the end of this month. In November, I will bring the work home and add it to my website for out of town, out of state and international collectors to peruse. I am nearing the end of the preparations for my solo show "Fox Medicine." This has been a year's worth of reflection, rumination, and intense creativity. A cohesive body of work, approximately 70 new pieces, was created while continuing to paint and process a multitude of other subjects during the past 12 months. In other words, I didn't clear my calendar but rather folded the show tasks into what I was already committed to creating. It's been a challenging and busy time and seems a little odd that it will end on Monday when I deliver the artwork. But it won't end, per se. Sometimes demos go sideways and wonky. It's the nature of having to articulate what one is doing while one is doing. That makes it more difficult (for me at least) to hit the flow state and really let loose, and I believe that it's here in this magical state where the roots of some of my best paintings lay. Continuing to step into the open door that   "Sacred,"   yesterday's painting opened, this is "Crabapple." There is something fascinating to me here - it's a tree, yes, but it's also a fox. It's both things simultaneously. As I work on these paintings (there's a mess of them coming to life in the studio), I shift the balance back and forth to allow one, then the other, to shine the brightest. It's a delightful game to play, walking this line between the dichotomy (is this the right word?) of the subject matter. How far can I push the tree as subject before the fox dissolves, and vice versa.  There is a calm serenity to these paintings, too, that I greatly need. I am particularly fascinated with a fox's ability to dissolve into their surroundings. I imagine that is much how Native Americans moved through the woods, too, silently, without being noticed. It seems to me that the less intrusive one is to their surroundings in nature, the more deeply one can be connected. And that's what this painting is about - how, through the centuries of time on earth, we are all bits of each other. We are literally connected via the most basic shared building blocks - the elements on this earth - simply recycled and reborn in other cells. I can't decide what my favorite bit of this painting is - the orange flower blooming above her left eye? the way her whiskers twist together into the negative space on the right side of the painting? her wry smile and half shut eyes? that purple flower just past her prime with petals dancing off into oblivion? Or that luscious pink rose slowly unfurling. Or the 4 leaf clover buried in the tangle of growth. I can't stop looking at her! She's emerging from the melted, nuanced swathes of color, partially formed but fully present. This is a remarkable painting to stand in front of. When dry, I'll hang her in one of the main rooms in the house and get some photos to show sense of scale and mood. This piece is something, all right, just like her namesake.
