Upended

Upended view her on my website Upended, original acrylic on quatrefoil shaped wood panel, 20”x20”x1/2”, $1500 plus s&h. I welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below). Just  reach out . There’s something intriguing about these floral paintings, which are not done from real life plants, but painted from the heart. I’m starting with the idea of gesture and body language - what might a certain feeling look like in plant form - and diving in from there.  The work goes through some crazy iterations - this one was full of stretched blooms (as if they were silly putty) before settling into the rose shrub. And that dahlia idea isn’t going anywhere - if I paint it enough times (even if it gets painted over!) I’ll figure out a way to make it work. You can get a good look at Upended over  on my website . You’ll find links to zoom in close to her surface or view in a room setting (please note that the room setting option will display here a bit diffe...

Uprooted

Uprooted view her on my website Uprooted, original acrylic on flat panel, 16”x20”, $850 plus s&h. I welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below). Just  reach out . Last week I was drawing flowers as my warmups. I guess that sort of leaked over to the easel, didn’t it?  I ask all sorts of “what ifs” whenever I am creating. What if the plant is simultaneously shown from multiple angles but painted pretty representationally? What if the space were treated like a cross-section showing both above and below the ground? What if the root ball and leaves swapped spots?  You can get a good look at Uprooted over  on my website . You’ll find links to zoom in close to her surface or view in a room setting. Purchasing is simple - add her to your cart and checkout and boom, she’s all yours! Let me know  if you would like a payment plan (30% non refundable deposit with the balance plus shipping paid in full inside 12 months time). Repeat offend...

Indigo

Indigo view her on my website Indigo, original acrylic on flat panel, 16”x20”, $850 plus s&h. I welcome your questions (yes, I offer payment plans - details below). Just  reach out . This painting is a rework. I was in love with the prior version,  Indigo Apricot , at the time I created her, and she’s been hanging in the studio ever since. The last couple weeks, though, I began to see things differently. I itched to go back into the painting and make some changes. In artist speak this is called “seeing with fresh eyes.” Fresh eyes are an important tool in that they help the artist critically view a work of art and design adjustments as it progresses. Ironically, fresh eyes are tough to maintain when one is in the thick of creating said work. At the time I painted  Indigo Apricot  I was focused on other ideas specific to a proposal I was writing and seemingly forgot some basics (like varied edgework and an interesting value pattern).  I am infinitely p...

Floret

Floret view her on my website Floret, original acrylic on panel, 24”x18”, private collection (thank you!).** I always welcome questions -   send them my way !   In case you haven’t noticed, I have been obsessed with layering line and painted shapes. This is a fascination I’ve had for years now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying exploring all the different ways I can combine these elements. Floret started as an abstract painting from last summer’s output. I then drew from memory overtop - at first I intended to draw a fox, but she also looked a little coyote-like. Then as I built up layers, she became stockier like a wolf. I’m ok with this sort of fluidity - I let the drawing/shapes move in whatever direction feels right for the painting. I call this “getting out of the way” - it’s an integral part of my intuitive painting process. Her face is mostly preserved from the abstract painting, and the remainder of the piece was woven in carefully as I painted so as to appear to be o...

NEW STUDIES Coleas and Dahlia

At left, Coleas, 8x10, acrylic on flat panel, $300 plus s&h to the first asking nicely. On right, Dahlia, 6x6, acrylic on flat panel, $200 plus s&h to the first asking nicely. Link to purchase is below.  Please reach out  with any questions. September in  my online classroom  was all about color, with a two day live demo last weekend. These two paintings were my demonstration pieces, which was held via zoom. I worked on them in real time, talking about how to mix bold saturated color in the dahlia piece and then, conversely, how to handle a backlit subject with muted tones. The live content circled back to touch on all the bits of color theory and behavior we had been learning all month. I finished both pieces later in the week, recording additional footage on how I tied things up. Dahlia has sold (thank you so very much) and Coleas remains available. You can see her in greater detail  here ,  viewed up close, in a room setting, and find a li...

I collect a handful of them and then play with various arrangements and overlaps on the studio floor. It's a fantastic way to reframe the designs and allow the paintings to have conversations with each other. I've also discovered that some of the paintings feel stronger when they are toge...

Last week I painted little florals inspired by the prior weekend's wedding centerpieces  It was all about lingering with the memory of our beautiful backyard garden party celebrating The Man Child and his delightful bride, The Smile Maker. The tent is down, leftovers have all been consumed, the yard got a lovely "wash" via a few great thunderstorms, and I actually caught up on some sleep. Now it's on to the next big event..... which, I haven't yet identified. I'm in a lovely little pocket of time with no pressing deadlines or looming projects. My summer abstraction workshop ended last week and the large commissioned piece I've worked on the last 2 months is shipping...
