In the last week, at least 10 of these trees paintings have sprouted and come to life. I am giving them space to evolve and trying to stay out of the way. These trees have rich, complicated lives. They have been shaped by their circumstances, and are unapologetic about where they stand. They assiduously record our histories while bridging the ground we are collectively rooted in with the heavens, our symbol for eternal life. I feel, too, as though they are emblematic of what we do to each other and our world. They bear witness.
