Some paintings are problematic, more so than others, taking a substantial amount of time and effort to figure out. And in the course of resolving them, I end up learning so much about myself. Petunia was just that. While she evolved the last 6 months, I faced some challenging trials in every facet of my life. Petunia responded to each during that time with a new layer of marks involving dramatic shifts. With hindsight, I can see now that the things I chose to try out in paint were extensions of the same things I was unpacking in my own life. This piece has also been a breakthrough for me in that I can see now with clarity what it means to pull an idea out from my internal well of knowing - what Jung referred to as a "collective unconscious" - a space I plan to choose to work from going forward.
