I’ve been thinking a lot about how abstract art, or rather art that isn’t strictly representational, is not fully appreciated by the general public. There is   a really interesting discussion   on this over on my FB page.   It is easier to gauge the apparent success of artwork when you can visually measure it’s accuracy. But what happens when you forget about that and instead simply allow yourself to respond emotionally to the art? Representation or logic aside, how does the piece make you feel? and then, from those feelings, what do you begin to see? She’s a fusion of the landscape centric Talisman (acrylic) paintings and the broken sky oil studies I have been obsessed with the last couple weeks (they have been shared on  FB  and  Insta ). She’s also got bits of my mixed media drawings in her - not literally, but the gems I discovered while making the mixed media drawings (last year) definitely informed her progression. She oozes serenity, which apparently I needed a good dose of, because my entire mood improved once she hit my easel. I’ve defined some takeaways and new what if’s to explore next.   Oil Studies see the collection   Pictured above, an intimately scaled oil study titled Autumn, inspired by the larger acrylic painting of the same name. This is impasto (thickly applied) oil paint on Stonehenge paper, paper sized 9”x12”. Autumn is part of 15 oil studies newly available, all visible through the above link. Questions? Just  reach out . I’ve been making these studies of my acrylic pieces, selections from The Talisman series, using the larger paintings as a launching point for creating something smaller in oils. Some of the studies are very similar to their inspiration piece, some went in a different direction entirely. This has been such a great exercise for so many reasons, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process and the resulting works. And now it’s time to let them go.
