Always a student

I’ve made a living making art for 25 years (yikes! I know I’m dating myself, but this is something worth shouting about). But yet I know nothing. Seriously.   The more I learn, the more I realize I have literally no clue. Which is why I absolutely LOVE taking classes. This week I am working with an intimate group of crazy wonderfuls (I have so many new besties - I am totally with my people here!) led by the brilliant   Emily Ball . We each brought our own What Ifs and she’s steering us into the sticky, messy work of mining truths. Bear and Sky are here with me, of course, and today was both impossible and exhilerating. Impossible because I caught myself in a seething hot lie, thinking I was working outside of my comfort zone and realizing that it was still well within arm’s reach. Exhilerating because when I realized I needed to hopscotch right over that edge into serious risk taking, there was zero bleeding. Much of what I made was really, really bad (if it had veins, it woul...

But we can continue to show up regardless. And be kind to ourselves, because showing up is what matters - the work will find a way to get completed, eventually. I bit off a bit more than I could chew, trying to paint something entirely new conceptually. I was chasing a What If that I couldn’t quite articulate, nor did I have a cle...

Questions can always come   my way . make her yours This girl started when I was clearing a mess of studies from my drawing area and   these two pieces aligned . I had dreamt of wolves a couple nights prior and of course, with Renee Good and other current affairs on my mind, momma bears were in the mix too. So I set out to make a painting about maternal strength. The bit of red over Bear’s eye was a remnant from the painting I worked overtop of. It felt like a burning ember. Which then gave me the idea to add a firey ...

Questions can always come   my way . make her yours My archives (the painting storage room) are under construction, so the studio is a hot mess. All inventory - including finished work, my personal collection, paintings designated to ship to galleries, unfinished works, paint-overs and naked panels - is ridiculously and perilously stacked around. My monkey mind is finding it a little challenging to stay focused. However, the whole moving of all those paintings got me looking at ones I l...

Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Subscribed Renaissance is a continuation of what I began exploring in   Kitsune , the integration of my monochromatic mixed-media drawings (featuring animals arranged totemically) with a full color painted abstract landscape. I have always been intrigued by the collision of separate ideas or things, rearranging the expected relationships in my pain...

No idea how this would turn out or how long the piece would take to resolve. Nor did I yet know the storyline behind the painting - these show up as the piece reveals itself to me. Imagine my surprise to sit back from her on New Year’s Day and realize she summed up ...
