Heliocentric is named for Copernicus’ cosmological theory, as this Bear believes herself to be the center of the universe.
My initial concept was a girl-with-pearl-earring sort of Bear, filled with flowers. I added sunflowers, and they were super fun but also very demanding - their faces competed with Bear. She asked for the petals to become little licks of flame, and things grew from there.
Heliocentric was worked with permission** from a photo taken by wildlife photographer Allie Swafford. Thank you, Allie, for allowing me to paint Felicia’s coquettish gaze (Grizzly Bear 863 from Yellowstone). Allie offers prints of her amazing wildlife photography - you can view them on her FB or insta accounts and message her directly to place an order.
**I can’t emphasize enough the importance of asking permission to paint from references, no matter how far one diverges. I was not planning a representational depiction of Felicia, but I did rely on facial expression, silhouette, fall of the light and other gestural elements to build my painting, all things Allie showcased in her image. Online images are not free for the taking (nor is it flattery when someone helps themselves, as many of us have heard over the years - it’s outright stealing). Copyrights and intellectual property rights are conferred the moment something is made, regardless of the maker’s age, country of residence, or the item’s registration with the government. A simple reverse image search will identify the photographer/creator so that you may ask permission to use it.
