New Gallery Representation

Purple Mountain Majesty, 48"x60", acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, available July 2024 through   Mirada Fine Art   in Denver, Colorado. Inquiries may always come   to me .   Since March I have painted nearly 48 square yards of canvas, used 2 gallons of gesso, a gallon of isolation coat medium, 1-1/2 gallons of acrylic gel medium, and countless tubes of paint. All for good reason - I am creating a fresh body of work for new gallery representation! I am delighted to announce I am joining forces with Mirada Fine Art, a contemporary and distinctive gallery in Denver, Colorado. I choose my representation carefully - gallery spaces are an extension of the experience I would provide collectors were they to visit my studio in person. The gallery and I become a team in bringing ideas to life, curating opportunities to view said art, and facilitating acquisitions. Mirada Fine Art will be an utterly fantastic partner and I am thrilled to be one of...

New On Demand Workshop

I have been hard at work behind the scenes, creating on demand lesson videos for students unable to commit to a workshop experience or my student membership. My goal is to provide affordable, easily digestable bites of thinking, painting process and specific technique in a streamable, self study format. These videos are takeaways from other teaching experiences, so they have already been student tested and approved. In them I share approaches to ideation, techniques, thought processes, and various tips on things like color mixing, palette management and intuitive work. I hope to release them monthly. If you have already painted with me in some capacity, check out the lesson descriptions to ascertain if the video is derivative from an experience you might already have had. The newest addition to this growing library is   The Making of Columbine , in which I outline the progression of a painting from the initial contour drawing all the way through to completion. There's...

New Painting: Rolling Hills

Rolling Hills, 30"x24" original painting, acrylic on flat panel (she will require framing), sold (thank you so very much!).  Link to purchase prints is   here .  Please reach out  with any questions. This is the final painting featured in my  Intuitive Painting  online workshop.** I created three pieces during the filming of this course, all originating from the same idea (a fusion of Bear with the California landscape), each one remarkably different and carrying her own distinctive personality. Also worth noting, this is a rare landscape oriented Momma Bear piece - they usually are portrait format. In addition to naked panels, I brought this one, containing a very loose color study of fall colors I did in October of last year, not knowing what I was going to paint overtop her. In the first day of drawing and planning designs, when I began layering my bear contour drawings together, suddently I knew what I wa...

NEW PAINTING Winged

Winged, 15"x30" original painting, acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, image painted around the sides so no need to frame, $1300 plus s&h to the first asking nicely.  Link to purchase is below.  Please reach out  with any questions. I love to work in layers. I start my paintings with a giant brush, gradually working from large marks to tighter ones. Recently I've begun asking myself in what other ways can I embrace the idea of "layered". The painting Winged is one of the results. LAYER1:  A small fox kit sits on a nuanced, creamy ground, in profile. She is watching something rather attentively, but it is outside the picture frame, so the viewer has to guess at what has grabbed her attention. LAYER 2:  She is partially obscured by a layer of butterfly specimens, the smallest and most delicate seated at the top of the winged totem. LAYER 3:  The presence of the butterflies changes the fox's ground to billowy clouds, and, as ...

Lumbering

Lumbering, 24"x30" original painting, acrylic on flat panel, sold (thank you so much!).  Prints are available   here .  Please reach out  with any questions. Lumbering is another of the pieces created in February as part of my  Intuitive Painting  online workshop.** I created three pieces during the filming of this course, all originating from the same idea (a fusion of Bear with the California landscape), each one remarkably different and carrying her own distinctive personality.  Lumbering was the most challenging of the three, coming home with me unresolved. It took a few more weeks for me to find her landing spot. Sometimes a painting needs a bit more time to come to fruition. And let's be real - it's also quite likely me, listening to the wrong things and taking her in the opposite direction. One of the students in the course reached out and asked to purchase Lumbering, before I even had the chance to formally add...

New Painting: Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea, 24"x30" original painting, acrylic on flat panel (she will require framing), $1300 plus s&h to the first asking nicely.  Link to purchase is below.   Please reach out   with any questions. I didn't expect to be so impacted by this week's eclipse, but all week long I've been painting dramatic skies and various suns, moons and stars. Life has aligned with my art for sure. This lovely was created a few months ago as part of my   Intuitive Painting   online workshop.** I created three pieces during the filming of this course, all originating from the same idea (a fusion of Bear with the California landscape), each one remarkably different and carrying her own distinctive personality. Bougainvillea seemed apropos to offer this week, with so many eyes fixated on the heavens. She can be viewed up close, in a room setting, and even purchased  on my website .   This is your chance, as a member of the First Dibbers C...

Eclipse

Eclipse, 24"x36" original painting, acrylic on flat panel (she will require framing), private collection (thank you and welcome to my newest collector!).   Please reach out  with any questions. I pull my subject matter from the things that happen in my life, and unless you've been living in a cave, there is a solar eclipse happening today, April 8th. A few weeks back I thought about doing an eclipse themed painting, but nothing else came to me other than a literal addition of an eclipsed landscape. That didn't feel genuine enough, and sure, I could have chased that idea and seen what evolved from it, but I've learned to let painting seeds mature. It's challenging, to be sure, but ultimately it serves the idea in the most authentic way possible. I came to terms with not having an eclipse painting to share in a timely fashion, and went on with my other projects. And then, probably because I was ignoring her, the eclipse idea grew legs. This painting didn't...

Persephone

Persephone, 24"x30" original painting, acrylic on flat panel, $1300 plus s&h to the first asking nicely.  Link to purchase is below.   Please reach out   with any questions. This painting started about 18 months ago. She wandered for a bit, or perhaps I was the one who got lost. Nevertheless, she has arrived here in the studio, on the brink of spring no less. True to her namesake.  Persephone was the daughter of Demeter (the goddess of agriculture). She was kidnapped by Hades and forced to live in the underworld with him. While looking for her daughter, Demeter ceased caring for the harvest, and the earth turned barren. There are various versions of the myth, but Zeus ultimately demanded Hades release her. But this was complicated because, while held captive and grieving, Persephone ultimately broke her fast and ate 6 pomegranate seeds. Hades negotiated the compromise that she spend 6 months, one for each seed e...

Eve is ready for a home

Eve, 24"x30", acrylic on flat panel, $1300 plus s&h to the first asking nicely, which you can do via   my website   or with   a sweet note to me . (PSST!! wanna learn to paint something like Eve, check out "Intuitive Painting," my online class with Kara Bullock.) Painting concepts are showing up these days at the oddest times. Typically I find my imagery inside my dreams, but there's been a shift. Lately ideas are coming direct to me during waking hours. This one showed up as I was rolling my yoga mat one icy cold snowy day in January. There was a bear and an apple tree, but not the visual, just a knowing. I had a sensation of the weight of the tree - the branches, greenery and fruit - filled the cavity of the bear's head, and the trunk trickled down the right hand edge. There was plenty of blue sky and sunshine I could feel but not really see.  I set out to explore this in paint, and two completely different pieces emerged. This ...

Delta, a Momma Bear Painting

Delta, 24"x24", acrylic on flat panel, $1200 plus s&h to the first asking nicely, which you can do via   my website   or with   a sweet note to me . I mentioned on my socials yesterday that my paintings are a singular object that acts as a touchstone for multiple moments. So when I look at a piece, I don't just see the final painting, but I remember all the experiences that keyed into her making. My oldest was recently married, my youngest readying to graduate university, which meant my role of mother was transitioning into something new. I officially had a new daughter while my other girl was leaping into adulthood. One of our favorite places to walk the dogs was sold to a developer. This historic area held weathered red barns and numerous outbuildings overgrown with vines and wildflowers - it was rich with texture and a complex variety of earthy reds. The brilliant red of the sumac and maples the fall prior to this painting, and how the un...

Wanna Paint with Me? launching an exclusive online workshop on the Talisman paintings.....

Last month I snuck off to Kara Bullock's art studio in California and secretly filmed   an online workshop !! This project has literally been in the works for years (she was so kind and patient when i needed to reschedule in 2023). And I tell you it was well worth the wait - I could not be prouder of what we built together during our week. We built the course   "Intuitive Painting - Call and Response."   And it's a good one! For the first time ever, in a series of linear and comprehensive video lessons, I share the process of creating a Talisman painting, from concept to completion. What is a Talisman painting? well, if you're new around here (and welcome! there's a good number of you!), it's the series I've been working on the last 4 years. A Talisman itself is an object imbued with magic, luck, or specific meaning. My Talisman paintings are that and more - an animal subject infused with landscape elements, painted with expressive marks and lots of ...

Papilionidae, a new painting

Papilionidae, 24"x24" original painting, acrylic on flat panel, $1200 plus s&h to the first asking nicely.  Link to purchase is below.   Please reach out   with any questions. Guess who felt pulled to the easel this week (yes, I admit, I've been a bit obsessed with drawing lately and not picked up my brushes for a hot second)?  I am looking for ways to initiating a shift in how I paint my animals, specifically Fox. Do you remember the saying "If you love something set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If it does not, it was never meant to be." With that idea in mind I set about creating a series of pieces giving Fox permission to walk away, thinking that if she did return, she would be transformed into something different and fresh. In the meanwhile, Butterfly showed up. Or maybe this is Fox channeling her inner Butterfly as the metamorphosis occurs. Whatever it is, I have goosebumps when I'm in her presence. Papilio...

March 2024 Classroom Calendar

The Magic Space   is my membership program, an online classroom where students get a front row seat to what's playing out in the studio, guidance on my various techniques and instruction on how they, too, can weave their artwork with processes, symbols and subject matter uniquely their own. Started in 2017, it began as a way for me to deliver deeper insight and valuable content to artists wishing to understand how I approach making my own art. It also enabled me to form a closer relationship with students and provide an entirely different level of support than what a typical in person workshop might provide. Over the years Magic Space participants have unearthed their own stylistic tendencies and learned how to speak about the what and why behind their art, and deep friendships have formed. All classroom content is delivered digitally, with three live events each month (check out the   free sample lessons   I've got on my YouTube channel). Additionally students hav...

Drawing and Painting

Swallowtail (working title), roughly 10"x12", ink and gouache on watercolor paper, from my new series of drawings, pieces which are pulling me into some powerful places. Last fall I had two pivotal experiences. I took a drawing workshop with   Stuart Shils   and I joined a mentoring group led by   Anne Siems . Stuart's teaching (Reframing the Ordinary) ignited a desire to work in black and white. He showed me how to pare down what I see into exciting compositions without the need of color (I know, life changing and so unexpected!) and encouraged risk taking via drawing exercises. Anne's leadership sparked a volley of ideas based on using drawing as a gateway to break open new ideas. I had worked with Anne in the past and knew she would push me into some exciting territory, but I underestimated the exponential power of the group. I imagine our sessions are much like graduate school, with deep conversations about ideas, methods and materials, as we each search for th...

The 100 Days Project

Day 1 of the 2024 100 Day Project. My source drawing on the left and a monotype pulled from it on the right, mixed media on watercolor paper 5"x7".  Not for sale - yet.... stay tuned! The 100 Day Project   is a global challenge to be creative for 100 days straight. It can be anything you desire - write a poem, learn to play or sing a song, try a new recipe, whatever floats your boat. I'm choosing to do more drawings - yes, I have been drawing every day (well, 5-6 days'/week) for the last year plus, so this shouldn't be too far of a stretch. And I won't beat myself up over missing a day or two. It's the idea of committing to a series that I find so appealing. Butterflies have been featured in many of my drawings lately, and I have an idea for a large scale project with multitudes of them. So why not take on this project as a mechanism to get the groundwork done? 100 days of little butterfly drawings. By the time I'm done, it may even be warm enough he...

A Homemade Valentine for You

Sal (Salvatore Doggie, one of my studio dogs) wanted me to you remind you how much you are loved. Today and everyday. Always and forever. Hope you are feeling it. And thank you so much for your interest in my artwork, All my best, warmly, Kim
