At the tail end of June (the 28th and 29th to be exact), I will be a guest at the Shaggy Chic Boutique in Birmingham Michigan. This painting, "Baxter's Tartan Collar," is the first of several pieces being developed specifially for this event.

It seemed to make sense that the announcements and press releases include the store's resident pooches, of which Baxter is only 1/2 (can you imagine, a terrier only being 1/2 of anything?!). I am guessing that Baxter's snazzy collar also came from Shaggy Chic.

I'll be in the store (which is terribly wonderful if you have a soft spot for a furred one) the entire weekend, displaying my original artwork and accepting commissions for new dog-a-day portraits. You are welcome to bring your dog along since - weather permitting - I'll have my camera on hand to shoot reference photos (this will not be a typical portrait photo shoot - I work from candid, non-flash photos, and rely on Mother Nature's helping hand. The pics I shoot that day will be for use in developing future paintings.). I'll accept reservations for dog-a-day paintings, and also have a variety of original artwork and giclees for sale.

10% of my sales along with commissioned booked works that weekend will be donated to the Michigan Animal Rescue League (http://www.michigananimalrescueleague.org/). This is a group I am very excited to work with, and one that the Shaggy Chic Boutique has patnered with in the past.

If you have any questions at all, please give the shop a call - 248-594-5599. They will be happy to provide specific hours, supply directions, answer any product questions (Finnigan recommends thes Mydogtoy items), get you on their mailing list and keep you informed as the date gets closer.

Which reminds me - if you are not on my mailing list (the old-fashioned snail one) now would be a great time to get yourself added! Send me an email (ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com) with the subject line "Mailing list", and I'll get you keyed into the database asap. (If you have purchased in the past, you are already on my list.) I do postcard mailings at least 3 times per year (the last one I sent was a Valentine Boston Terrier), and try to keep everyone informed of events happening within their area.

Also, if you are interested in booking a dog-a-day commission, I suggest you step forward soon. The weekend events and shows where I connect with new clients are starting up in the coming weeks. I anticipate fielding many new inquiries and scheduling portraits during these times. I would love to give preferential treatment to those of you who have been following along all the time, hence this "heads up." FYI I am currently scheduling dog-a-days for the end of April 2009.

I do have a limited number of holiday spots for dog-a-days that are reserved for past clients. If you are considering a dog-a-day as a gift for a family member or friend, please speak up now (ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com) so that I can get your project on my books. I hate having to say "no," but each year those coveted holiday slots get booked earlier and earlier. I hate even more asking you to plan your holiday gift giving when the snow is still fresh in our minds........

Thanks, as always, for looking.
And for sharing these paintings with your friends and family!
See you tomorrow,
Kim

Picture Book "A Dog Named Blue" - now available!!

The cover of "A Dog Named Blue," now available from Blurb publishers. When I first painted Amelia I never imagined that she would be re-christened "Blue" and inspire a book. In her defense, Amelia had a number of other partners in crime - animals who's portraits seemed to fall into a specific color category and prompt color-centric names. In typical ADD fashion, my brain started spinning 100mph. What if I turned those muses' paintings into a picture book for animal loving kids? I shared my idea with three friends in the industry, and they eagerly offered their expertise. I am truly indebted to them. Illustrator and author Matt Faulkner and children's book author and literacy expert Kristen Remenar edited an early version of the draft. They suggested key plot/conceptual changes that made it oodles better. Designer Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson worked her magic, pairing the images with perfectly color...

Tabby Kit

"Tabby Kit," 5" x 7", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a tiny little orange striped guy from Morgue File . This painting can be yours for $289, which includes s&h inside the US. And in case you didn't see it, a little doodle of him is also available for sale here . Inquires may come directly to me .  Although it certainly doesn't FEEL like spring here (snow and ice and wind chills, brr!), I can tell that spring is coming. The mercury is rising a wee bit each day and the days are getting longer and brighter. Over the weekend we drove with the moonroof open just to feel the sun's meager and oh-so-very-welcome warmth (although the heat in the car was cranked, too, in the interest of full disclosure!). I wanted to work with spring-like colors today, and this little guy was still on my mind , so I grabbed a small panel and got to work. Of course, I also have Poppy to finish and some changes to make to another po...

Dear Copyright Thieves

Dear Copyright Thieves,   Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's free for the taking. So let's just stop pretending the internet is a free-for-all.   Don't play the card that you didn't know - that's insulting. And don't also tell me that you meant to follow up and get permission but never got a chance to. That's insulting too. And by the way, don't you have a copyright protection notice on your own site?   And don't even try and point the finger at a third party who commissioned you to make a copy of my painting - again, an insult - you and I both know the difference between a reference photo and a painting.   And don't tell me that I asked for it because I share my artwork on the internet. I share my paintings and ideas and the stories behind them so as to encourage others to pursue  their own passions . I do not share so that those lacking integrity and morals can copy and market the images as their own...
