Tomorrow I kick off my first ever day long painting workshop. I'll take 14 students from the Anchor Bay Artists Guild on an all-day painting marathon! I am really looking forward to this - hope everyone eats their Wheaties!! I'll introduce basic color theory, demonstrate techniques for mixing lively and harmonious color, and show them how to paint with loose, dynamic brush-strokes. I plan on lots of laughter mixed in with the content. One of the exercises we'll do involves learning to see nuanced color in light and dark objects - and this little study I completed is the perfect example of whites not being white and blacks not being black. I love the symbolism, her paint application (it's like soft butter), and the quiet sense of humor her work conveys. Her paintings make me happy to the core every time I see them. If you want to smile inside, too, click here and take a peek at her work - I asked permission to include an image in this note/on my blog, but she's most likely engrossed at her own easel. I don't blame her! Clearly Karen's influenced this painting of mine - but what you might not know is that the gift I painted came to me directly from her. I kid you not. It's part of her project "Present and Accounted For," where she has sent out extravagantly wrapped gifts, asking the recipient to pass them on. You can read more about the idea and how it all started here. My gift from Karen is coming to my next couple workshops, where students will have the opportunity to use it as a prop in their own still life paintings. Afterwards, I'll send it on it's merry way.
